    VW t4 big-top.

Finally got around to tidying up the van. Have owned this for around 3 years. Bought it with about 60, 000 miles on it, and it was very tidy. Have done a trip to europe each summer since we have it and use it in and out to work most days too. Went to croatia on the first trip(thanks to advice from Brian(happy on here) and barcellona next one. then went to germany, poland and to brno wsbk last year and it never missed a beat in all the miles. Faded paint and a few scabs of rust in the usual t4 places led to it getting a bit of tlc over the last week or two. Bought new wheels and got my brother to paint the whole van, smoothing and colour coding the bumpers and roof.

As I said earlier today, painting the roof definatly made a huge difference. But we saw that on the other high top at Vantastival last year, that it wasn't a bad plan.

It's like having bought a new camper, even though it's the old camper, ain't it ?

Got a new head unit for the van today. Said I'd spend an hour or two fitting it this morning when I finished work. Ended up at it til 10 o'clock tonight! What a b@$ tard of a job, but am happy with the way its working out. the radio is bigger than a double din, so needed a bit more hacking of the dash to fit it in.

ripped out the middle air vents, and a few of the blank switch spaces, this left a small gap for a gauge, and still have to move the fresh air vents that were in the middle.

got it in place and started trying to fillin a few of the gaps!

and nearly there! a few more bits to finish off. am going to move the middle air vent down to the pannel below the heater controls, and have a boost gauge to fit in the space beside the hazard light switch.

    nice work!

Tell me about your exhaust, why a side exit? Any performance gain from the shorter run? How loud is it?

Thanks side exit came about out of being skint at the time. the van was due for doe and it needed a few exhaust boxes replaced. i rang the DOE centre and they said as long as it exits behind the driver and sticks out enough to clear the van and not enough to knock pedestrians it would be ok. its just a section of straight through(the cat is still in there) pipe with a bolt on tail pipe to tidy it up. its not very loud atall. very little difference to the original, the brother was telling me that the turbo keeps it quite, if it wasnt turbo it would be alot louder. theres no noticable difference in power realy. might get a decat for it shortly and that might make a bit of difference.

got a decat section for the exhaust fitted today. for the last couple of days the van was down on power and it sounded like the cat might have been a bit bunged up, so got one of my brothers (the Tyre Brigade in Athlone) to fit it.
while they were at it i wanted the side exit pipe moved back a bit closer to the rear wheel, partly because i thought it would look better and partly because when stopped in traffic with the window down, it was a little bit smelly(mainly exhaust fumes from the outside !)

Delighted with the way it turned out, the van sounds much better, but still nowhere near too loud. it fees like theres a little better power innit too.

Could you have got a De-cat pipe Louis or do you need it for the camper DOE?

It's the de-cat pipe he's fitted now. He just didn't bother before.
