I tend to do 2-3 road trips to the continent a year. I just hate wasting time in airports and I prefer to have my own bus with me. It gives independence.

Sometimes, things just don't work out .. or maybe they do .. just not as intended.

So, some time in June I hopped on the ferry from Dublin to Holyhead and headed straight over to Hull for the second ferry leg. It's the shortest stretch through the UK and avoids the M25 and London including all it's traffic entirely.

On the way across, you'll meet hit the highest motorway in the UK and you'll also meet this crazy house:

Yep. That farmhouse is in the middle of the motorway. One direction goes around the one side. The other direction goes around the other way.

The house is a historic building and hence couldn't be touched, when the motorway was build.

Anyhow .. about 50 km before Hull ... disaster. My cab steamed up, the engine was cooking and I was only 3 hours from ferry departure. Basically, a coolant pipe had split in the LT. After 20 years, stuff like that can happen. I ended up missing the ferry while waiting for the tow truck. The bus got recovered to the nearest exit and I found shelter on the parking lot of a local pub.

The pub owner let me camp out there and him and his mate even helped me trying to source a replacement part. No joy though. Another plan was cooked up.

Looey was leaving Ireland 2 days after me to go to Italy. So in the morning my coolant pipe was temporarily glued back together. As good as we could. And I headed towards Dover. A mate of mine pulled the needed replacement part out of my scrappy LT in the workshop and send it on the way with Looey. Filling up coolant regularly, taking it easy, I made it to Dover.

I set up in the Kingsdown International Camping Centre right on top of the white cliffs of Dover.

The view is amazing, but 3G is patchy as foook.

In the morning Looey and Anita arrived and within 20 minutes, I had the part replaced and was back on the road .. meaning ferry .. to France.

My first target: Northern Germany. For a workshop weekend with other LT owners.

I also picked the first parts up. My new wheels. Quite a difference, to what's on the LT at time.

A great weekend was had.

My parents are sailing during the summer, so whenever I'm around, I'll try to see, if I can meet them in a harbour somewhere around the Baltic. This year, they were at the Kieler Woche. One of the biggest sailing shows.

The "Solvang" is practically our 2nd home.

It's a norwegian fishingboat from 1930, that has been converted.

A short trip over the border to Denmark, getting supplies, meeting up with a few friends back home and my next target was the alps. I had arranged for some parts down there.

A bunch of original LT 4x4 split rims, 2 front doors with electric windows, a spare transfer box, lots of nig-nags.

626
Getting the old tires of the rims didn't turn out too easy.

The bus is slowly filling up. Good thing that I brought a pop-up tent.

On the way back, a stop-over in Frankfurt/Main. A friend of mine lives here.

One of the bigger markets was on, while I was there.

It's not what you expect in a big city like Frankfurt. Lots of different food, arts, music. You name it.

On the way back to the ferry in the Netherlands, I met these guys.

2 motorbikes towing caravans.

Arriving in the UK on the first July weekend, I was in for a surprise.

While June had been fairly cold, July turned out extremely hot with loads of sun, to what would be one of the best summers in the last years.

I had planned a stopover in the UK for CamperJam that weekend.

I camped up with the Syncronaut Club.

It was so hot that weekend, that people had to be hosed down.

A bit of the Syncro display.

Anyhow. After about 2 weeks, and loads of km's, I arrived back home with a van filled to the roof with parts and lots of work to do.
